I am Janet McPherson and I grew up in Bury, Lancashire. Right from a young child I was always surrounded by everything to do with cars, many of which were performance and exotic vehicles. My father, who learned his mechanical skills with the RAF, worked in the garage trade and for a company called Nunn’s in Manchester and enthusiastically rallied Mini’s; from the early 1960’s through to the early 70’s. It was then that my younger brother, Stuart, took up kart racing, with dad quite naturally taking on the role of race mechanic. I suppose being girl I didn’t really get the motor sport thing, as I had my eye on far more feminine The first time I drove my kart I had no briefing as to how to control the thing, and sneaking onto Burtonwood track after hours, I was given a push start and just expected to get on with it. Well of course, I hadn’t gone more than a few yards when I crashed, an occurrence at which the few casual bystanders thought to be very funny, shouting with laughter at my misfortune. Dad suggested that I put away the kart, saying it was a bad idea, but I was having none of it. I am not one who gives up that easily. Whether this was in my blood all along, or whether it was because I wanted to show that I could do it, but whatever the reason, I got straight back on the track and drove like a demon. After that there was no stopping me and it wasn’t long before I was turning out to be successful at kart racing. As you now look into my website you will find information about my past, and my present pursuits. I am, and have always been, involved in raising money for various charities and devote much of my motoring time challenging myself in support of good causes. I have competed in saloon car racing as well as a variety of single–seater classes, and have even competed in motor sport events with Eddie Jordan. I have had many great cars, and been involved with many more, and currently own a beautiful Austin Healey 3000, which I drive competitively. I also have a Land Rover 90, and that too I drive competitively, but that is off–road and in the mud. I don’t just drive, I get involved with the machanical aspects of cars as well and I am quite capable of getting under the bonnet with a spanner or two. |
Later within this site I will tell you about how I became involved in 4x4 off-roading and MAC 4x4, raising money for the MacMillan Cancer Care charity with my Land Rover.
Along with other vehicles that have been so much part of my life, I will also be talking about my beautiful concours Austin Healey, and how this car was restored from something that really looked quite different to how it looks today. |
